The Finite Element Analysis (FEA) Suite is used to analyze complex engineering problems. The suite is used to run Abaqus finite element method software, discrete element method code, as well as other custom computational analysis code.

The system is used for the research and analysis of currently available orthopedic devices, as well as the design and development of custom orthopaedic implants. Analysis of currently available implants includes implant failure analysis, stress analysis, fatigue failure analysis, dynamics simulation, and computational tribology.

New patient specific orthopaedic implants are designed and developed by importing computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) files into our computer aided design (CAD) environment. Then the new implant is designed based upon the patient’s specific needs. Next, computational/FEA simulations of the loading conditions and wear process are conducted to analyze integrity of the device and optimize the design.

The Finite Element Analysis Suite consists of a 48 compute core cluster. The system greatly reduces the run time of finite element models and computational calculations, as well as enabling the analysis of much more complex models.
