Information for Caregivers
Caregivers play an essential role in supporting patients recovering from hip or knee surgery. Your help can improve safety, comfort, and recovery outcomes. Understanding what to expect and how to assist will make the recovery process smoother for both you and the patient.

- Assist with daily activities such as dressing, bathing, and meal preparation
- Support safe mobility, including the use of walkers, crutches, or canes
- Help manage medications as prescribed by the healthcare team
- Monitor the home environment to reduce fall risks and ensure safety
- Offer emotional support and encouragement during recovery
After Surgery Support:
- Follow discharge instructions carefully with the patient
- Help the patient follow activity restrictions and rehabilitation guidelines
- Encourage gentle movement and prescribed exercises as directed
- Watch for signs of complications (such as increased pain, swelling, fever, or redness)
- Ensure follow-up appointments are attended
Preparing the Home:
- Remove loose rugs, clutter, and other tripping hazards
- Set up a comfortable resting area on the main floor if possible
- Keep essential items within easy reach
- Install grab bars or handrails in bathrooms if needed
When to Contact the Healthcare Team:
- Sudden increase in pain, swelling, or redness
- Signs of infection (fever, wound drainage, warmth around incision)
